Europe 1600-1815 Galleries The V&A

This chain of nine galleries is the largest project that the V&A has undertaken for many years. The V&A wanted to re-create the connection with the outside by allowing views out and letting daylight in. Letting daylight into galleries that contain light sensitive artefacts is a challenge. Working with the design team, Sutton Vane Associates developed the light controlling baffles that carefully filter the daylight. The higher parts of the windows allow views of trees and a connection with the outside.

Sutton Vane Associates spent weeks creating computer simulations to make sure that the light controlling shutters and blinds would work on both sunny summer days and gloomy winter evenings. Sutton Vane Associates developed the circular pendants. These provide a rhythm that picks up on the rhythm of the architecture. The pendants make both soft light from the glowing rings and precise spots for highlighting exhibits. All the lighting has been carefully designed to show the colours and shapes of the wonderful artefacts.

“I wanted to tell you I particularly enjoyed the captivating lighting on the portrait of Salome with the Head of St. John the Baptist.”
