An Ancient Monument built in Napoleonic times to defend the harbour, the 18 Gun Battery in Portsmouth presented some unique lighting challenges. In an area prone to both flooding, and vandalism, the lights had to be designed sturdily. No drilling or intervention with the historic fabric was allowed.
The series of arches that had once housed the great guns were each lit by a single narrow beam shining straight down. This bathed the vaults in a beautiful, warm glow created by the reflected lighting. This novel approach of lighting a public space with reflected light won the Lighting Design Award for Community Lighting.
