Lighting the woodlands and exterior of Muncaster Castle helped create a revenue-earning winter visitor attraction called Darkest Muncaster. One of the challenges of designing the scheme was to restrict the amount of light used as the castle is in a National Park. The entrance and the one kilometre walk through the woods are lit with dramatic lighting, much of which is coloured. The castle and its surroundings are bathed in pre-programmed, dynamic and colour-changing light, including the original ‘Tom Fool’s Tree’.
Ghostly lights in the castle windows add to the magic of the experience. The low-energy scheme designed by Sutton Vane Associates included LED lighting used for way-finding.
