The overall lighting strategy for the Olympic Park was needed to provide a master plan to weld together the work of the numerous design teams working on individual buildings, structures, areas, roads, paths, and cycle routes. The entire strategy was written by Sutton Vane Associates in ten weeks. The strategy was written with renewable technologies such as wind turbines, PV Panels, and LED lighting in mind.

After writing the Lighting Strategy for the Olympic Park, Sutton Vane Associates prepared detailed designs for the public realm spaces for the Olympic Park in East London. The criteria for the lighting was very strict as there was a desire to create the most 'sustainable games ever’. Lighting was designed in conjunction with renewable technologies such as wind turbines and photo voltaic panels. Bespoke solutions were developed to provide a sense of spectacle for the billions of television viewers from all over the world.

A line of 31m high "Memory Masts" were designed to light the concourse around the main stadium. These are now a prominent feature of the new permanent park.

The Memory Masts are designed to keep the memory of the London Olympics alive for years to come.
