National Museum of Scotland

Ten galleries and 3,000 artefacts ranging from aircraft to fashion and steam engines to textiles, were all lit by Sutton Vane Associates at the National Museum of Scotland. The project has the added challenge of daylight flooding in through skylights in some areas and no natural light in other areas. The new galleries of the National Museum of Scotland gave SVA the opportunity to create a series of distinct lighting designs to complement and differentiate the spaces.

The lighting in the Fashion Gallery broke all the rules of lighting light sensitive artefacts. The clothes are on mannequins that stand on internally lit long panels that look like fashion runways. The clothes are regularly rotated so they are not given high dosages of light.

The extensive and very well received project was highly commended in the 2018 LUX Awards.
