Neuron Pod

The Neuron Pod is the newest addition to the world famous Centre of the Cell Education and Research unit at Queen Mary University of London. This department has edgy and exciting architecture, with the Pod itself designed by the renowned Will Alsop. The educational and lecturing pod is designed to look like a living organism. All internal and external lighting is designed by Sutton Vane Associates.

The curving outside is covered in flexible hair-like dendrites that all sway and move in the wind. The dendrites dim up and down and change colour. The space can be hired for a variety of events and the lighting provides flexibility accordingly.

The dramatic lighting has raised the profile of the university, and has been awarded a prestigious LIT Lighting Design Award as well as being a Darc Awards winner and being shortlisted for the RIBA Awards.

“It’s what we hoped and dreamed about.
It’s iconic, controversial, fun and extremely practical.”
— Professor Fran Balkwill, Queen Mary University of London
