St Peters Church Battersea

St Peters Church in Battersea is part of a new development, including a community centre and 8 storey residential block. The structure, designed by Portal Architecture, seats over 300 worshippers.

The church boldly steps out of the surrounding pavement, with simply brown bricks supporting the brass cladding that forms a protective armour over the building. The 3 steps to the structure are separated by vibrant mosaics of digitally printed glass, which gives a more playful detail to the otherwise bold and somewhat imposing church. Inside, the glass brings colourful dappled light into an otherwise monochromatic timber-clad space. Sutton Vane Associates were commissioned to light this new contemporary hub for the people of Battersea.

Due to its location sandwiched between two busy roads, exterior lighting had to be kept to a minimum to protect it from vandals and theft. The decision was made to focus on lighting the modern take on stained glass, which would then provide subsequent yet subtle lighting to the exterior. The glass was lit along its perimeter, allowing its beauty to be enjoyed from inside and out. The effect when viewed from the outside, is warm splashes of warm light that delicately flow onto the brass cladding.

Concealed lighting was used throughout to maintain and leave the sharp lines of the wooden-clad interior free of distractions. Warm lighting was chosen to create an inviting ambience that complimented both the colours of the exterior and interior finishes, connecting the contrasting architecture. A sculpture and stone carving by renowned artist Richard Kindersley was also lit.
