Part of the huge Portsmouth Harbour Renaissance Project for which Sutton Vane Associates won the 2002 Lighting Design Award, this area also won the Landscape Award for 2002. The space is between the two tall residential tower blocks, Harbour Tower and Seaward Tower, and it tells the time in two ways: It is a sundial and the lights set into the ground mark out the hours. The lights in the ground are ultra long life LEDs and are turned on and off by a special piece of software which receives a time signal so that it is always accurate. Children love playing and skipping over the moving lights. The design uses only high efficiency long life lamps and is vandal resistant.
