Winchester Cathedral

Lighting for this new three-level exhibition space in the South Transept, aptly named Kings and Scribes, was designed by Sutton Vane Associates. Sutton Vane Associates carried out natural light predictions to lower and balance levels of daylight; allowing visitors time for adaptation and allowing light sensitive objects to be lit.

This was particularly important on the ground floor, where rare bible books could only be lit to a maximum of 50 lux. Intricate medieval wall paintings behind one of the bibles were left to glow in the dark (due to their even higher sensitivity). Sutton Vane Associates also designed the lighting for the collection of amazing stone faces, working with shadows and highlights to really emphasise and show off their character. The scheme was highly successful with an image of one of the lit stone faces on the front cover of the Society of Light and Lighting: Museum and Art galleries guide, as well as winning a prestigious LIT Lighting Design award.
