900-Year-Old St Bartholomew’s Hospital
Sutton Vane Associates were commissioned to light the magnificent Grade I listed Hogarth Stair and Great Hall at the 900 year-old-St Bartholomew’s Hospital in central London.
Some of our challenges included lighting the paintings of The Great Samaritan and Christ and the Pool at Bethesda which are on the stair leading to the Great Hall. These fabulous paintings have a glossy finish and can be viewed from 3 dimensions and many perspectives, so our task was to minimise the amount of reflection and at the same time provide safe lighting for visitors to ascend and descend the elegant stair. Emergency lighting is incorporated and the fine 18th century gilded chandelier has been restored and re-lamped with a warm inviting light.
The staircase leads onto the double height Great Hall, which we have lit to modern standards using energy efficient and totally concealed light fittings that provide light which celebrates the architecture and is suitable for a range of events and activities, in addition to providing a wellbeing hub for hospital staff.
